cumulative postings by Glenn R. Stewart, Coordinator, Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group at Long Marine Lab, University of California, Santa Cruz

NOTE:  This wiki was created by followers of the San Jose City Hall peregrines, as such the wiki overall is SJ Peregrine centric.  However, the information recorded on this page, and the below linked pages, are a composite of Glenn's postings in response to questions posed to both the SF and SJ forums, and are meant to be referenced by anyone interested in reviewing Glenn's previous posts.

These postings cover prior seasons as well as current season.  You will find the forum moderators and Glenn himself may refer you to this page so you may read his prior response to your always valued questions.  I liken the 'look-up' of an answer in this digest to that of looking up the definition of a word in the dictionary; the process takes me on a much more vast journey than just looking up the one word - I find myself stopping along the way to read about all the other words I don't recognize.   Here of course, it would be unexpected subject matter to delve into more deeply.  I find that process enjoyable, I hope you do too.  Read on...

More than one comment by Glenn on a particular subject? I have them bulletized or separated in some way (e.g.  + ~ + ~ + ~ + ~ +);  I've included a synopsis of a question where necessary to set up Glenn's comment.  If a posting was retrieved from the SF_PGE forum archives, I have indicated SF_PGE next to the date.  The San Francisco PG&E nest site was established years prior to the San Jose City Hall site; they have highly experienced and knowledgeable moderators overseeing their forum and a great deal may be learned by reviewing the posts to that forum.  To subscribe to that forum, send an email to:  SF_PGE_Falcons-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

2013 Season facts -

Eggs laid:
#1:   February 19 @ ~5:12p PT
#2:   February 22 @ ~6:38a PT  [~61 hours after #1]
#3:   February 24 @ ~5:53p PT [~59.5 hours after #2]
#4:   February 27 @ ~6:55a PT [~60 hours after #3]

*Hard incubation began:    February 24 - count 33 days forward for approximate date to expect any eggs to hatch

(*) Hard incubation means minimal time away from the eggs

Eggs hatched:

#1:  March 31 @ ~6:52a PT
#s 2 & 3:  April 1 @ ~8:27a PT, two more eyasses revealed

The fourth egg did not hatch.  It is suspected that this unhatched egg may have been the first laid, and possibly not fertilized.  Glenn will collect the egg on banding day and update the forum with his findings.

Banding Day:  April 23, 2013 @ ~ 7a.m.  Banding videos:  Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4

Names and ID #s (in the sequence we saw them banded):

  • Comet, U/50 - Yellow tape on right leg
  • Striker, 90/P - Red tape on left leg
  • Orion, 95/S - Silver tape on left leg

Fledge Dates (all times indicated are Pacific)

  • May 5:  Striker, 90/P - PRE-FLEDGE after being wind swept off East ledge.  Landed safely and was returned to the top of City Hall on 5/7.
  • May 9:  Striker, 90/P -  flew unobserved in the early morning hours from the roof to parts unknown, but was located on the louvers a couple floors below the Mayor's office at 5:31a.
  • May 10, Orion, 95/S - flew unobserved in the early morning hours to location unknown.  He was discovered missing during a 4:30a camera check-in (we have very dedicated Camera Operators!).  At 6:19a he was located on the Rotunda elevator shaft.
